A Time to Live Surviving Suicidal Thoughts

Strategy 1: Methods Distancing*
“I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.” Psalms 4:8 NIV

If you have anything in your living environment that can be easily used as a means of lethal harm, it must
be removed from your home during the next twelve months. At minimum, this means no firearms, ropes, or
large quantities of unnecessary medication may be on the premises at any time.
Making Your Home Safe
The first step in surviving active suicidal thoughts is to make it as difficult as possible for you to harm
yourself in your own home. The home should be a safe-haven, not a tempting death trap. Methods
distancing, like a survival kit poncho, is designed to protect you from the environment. Because sudden
emotional pain can bring overwhelming life-threatening thoughts, it is critical to distance yourself from any
potential means of self-harm.
If you are reading this book, you most likely have a suicide plan in place. I want you to be honest about your
selected methods by listing them below. Next, indicate which items are accessible in your home by
placing a Y for yes or a N for no in the provided space.
Selected Methods Currently Accessible (Y/N)
1) _____________________________________________ _______________
2)_____________________________________________ _______________
3) ____________________________________________ _______________
If any of your selected methods are currently accessible in your home, they must be removed within the
next 72 hours. Your life is in danger.
